The Seven Spirits Of God

By Wendell Tenison

Introduction:

The seven spirits of God are some of his attributes both essential and ethical to the Hypostatic Logos who put on human nature, Jesus the Christ, who being the creator of us all, formed these traits of God's likeness and image within us.

They do not compare to the created angels, hosts and spirits in that they enherently exist with God as part of his being. God accurately identifies these attributes as spirits, because he himself is spirit, Jn.4:24. Therefore, the word spirit attached to these attributes should not be confusing. The most obvious of the seven is the spirit of wisdom contained in Solomon's writings. Please read the entire chapter.

Prov 8:1 "Doth not wisdom cry? and understanding put forth her voice?

Prov 8:22-23 "The LORD possessed me in the beginning of his way, before his works of old."I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was."

Along with our spirit and heart that are not flesh and blood, God has placed six of these spirits within the infrastructure of all of mankind. However, his Holy Spirit is only given to those who obey him, as we shall see in the lesson text.

Most would consider this subject as too deep and off limits. There are more questions than answers, but no valid excuse can be offered for not making a genuine effort to understand this unique subject.

All things created including all of God's host and angels:

Psa 148:1-5 "Praise ye the LORD. Praise ye the LORD from the heavens: praise him in the heights......Praise ye him, all his angels: praise ye him, all his hosts......Praise ye him, sun and moon: praise him, all ye stars of light......Praise him, ye heavens of heavens, and ye waters that be above the heavens......Let them praise the name of the LORD: for he commanded, and they were created."

John 1:1-3 "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God......The same was in the beginning with God......All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made."

Col 1:13-16 "Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:.....In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:.....Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:.....For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:"

Jesus the Christ was not created as one of these things in the previous verses, but to the contrary, he created all of them.

The Seven Spirits of God:

Rev 1:4 "John to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace be unto you, and peace, from him which is, and which was, and which is to come; and from the seven Spirits which are before his throne;"

Rev 3:1 "And unto the angel of the church in Sardis write; These things saith he that hath the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars; I know thy works, that thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead."

Rev 4:5 "And out of the throne proceeded lightnings and thunderings and voices: and there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God."

Rev 5:6 "And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth."

Zec 4:10 "For who hath despised the day of small things? for they shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel with those seven; they are the eyes of the LORD, which run to and fro through the whole earth."

Isa 11:1-2 "And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots:.....And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD;"

Counting there are seven spirits that are a perfect or complete number.

Note: the seven eyes or spirits of God are sent forth and to run to and fro through the whole earth.

Seven Spirits of God upon Christ:

Mat 12:18 "Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall show judgment to the Gentiles."

Luke 3:22 "And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased."

John 3:34 "For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him."

Mat 12:42 "The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for she came from the uttermost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here."

Mat 13:54 "And when he was come into his own country, he taught them in their synagogue, insomuch that they were astonished, and said, Whence hath this man this wisdom, and these mighty works?"

Luke 2:52 "And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man."

Luke 2:47 "And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers."

Matthew chapters 5 thru 7, the Sermon on the Mount demonstrate perfect counsel.

Rev 3:18 "I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see."

Mat 13:58 "And he did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief."

Mark 1:27 "And they were all amazed, insomuch that they questioned among themselves, saying, What thing is this? what new doctrine is this? for with authority commandeth he even the unclean spirits, and they do obey him."

Mat 7:28-29 "And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his doctrine:.....For he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes."

Luke 4:16-20 "And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read......And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written,.....The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,.....To preach the acceptable year of the Lord......And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him."

John 7:15 "And the Jews marvelled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, having never learned?"

Luke 8:27-37 "And when he went forth to land, there met him out of the city a certain man, which had devils long time, and ware no clothes, neither abode in any house, but in the tombs......When he saw Jesus, he cried out, and fell down before him, and with a loud voice said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God most high? I beseech thee, torment me not......(For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For oftentimes it had caught him: and he was kept bound with chains and in fetters; and he brake the bands, and was driven of the devil into the wilderness.).....And Jesus asked him, saying, What is thy name? And he said, Legion: because many devils were entered into him......And they besought him that he would not command them to go out into the deep......And there was there an herd of many swine feeding on the mountain: and they besought him that he would suffer them to enter into them. And he suffered them......Then went the devils out of the man, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the lake, and were choked......When they that fed them saw what was done, they fled, and went and told it in the city and in the country......Then they went out to see what was done; and came to Jesus, and found the man, out of whom the devils were departed, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid......They also which saw it told them by what means he that was possessed of the devils was healed......Then the whole multitude of the country of the Gadarenes round about besought him to depart from them; for they were taken with great fear: and he went up into the ship, and returned back again."

John 2:14-17 "And found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting:.....And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers' money, and overthrew the tables;.....And said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father's house an house of merchandise......And his disciples remembered that it was written, The zeal of thine house hath eaten me up."

No one ever harmed or laid a hand on him until his appointed time. His eyes were piercing as a flame of fire, Rev.1:14; 2:18. Therefore, his enemies could not look him in the eye and as a result, their intimidating skills went aloof.

The Seven Spirits of God to Man:

Listed below are the several scriptures that prove beyond any shadow of doubt that the Holy Spirit of God does in fact dwell only within those who obey him:

Acts 5:32 "And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him."

Acts 13:52 "And the disciples were filled with joy, and with the Holy Ghost."

Acts 15:8 "And God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness, giving them the Holy Ghost, even as he did unto us;"

Rom 5:5 "And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us."

Rom 8:9 "But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his."

Many so-called Christians claim that they do not have the Holy Spirit dwelling within them. By their own admission they have condemned themselves already.

1 Cor 3:16 "Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?"

2 Cor 1:22 "Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts."

2 Cor 5:5 "Now he that hath wrought us for the selfsame thing is God, who also hath given unto us the earnest of the Spirit."

Gal 4:6 "And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father."

1 Th 4:8 "He therefore that despiseth, despiseth not man, but God, who hath also given unto us his holy Spirit."

1 John 4:13 "Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit."

Jude 19 "These be they who separate themselves, sensual, having not the Spirit."

John 14:23 "Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him."

Rev 3:20 "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me."

In addition to having the endowment of the Holy Spirit, God and Christ also make their abode within us as the Godhead bodily.

1 Cor 2:7 "But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory:"

1 Cor 12:8 "For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;"

Eph 1:17 "That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him:"

Col 1:9 "For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;"

James 1:5 "If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him."

Exo 28:3 "And thou shalt speak unto all that are wise hearted, whom I have filled with the spirit of wisdom, that they may make Aaron's garments to consecrate him, that he may minister unto me in the priest's office."

Deu 34:9 "And Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom; for Moses had laid his hands upon him: and the children of Israel hearkened unto him, and did as the LORD commanded Moses."

Moses was the first to impart a spiritual gift by the laying on of hands.

Eph 1:18 "The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,"

Col 1:9 "For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;"

2 Tim 2:7 "Consider what I say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things."

Mat 28:20 "Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen."

2 Tim 4:2 "Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine."

2 Cor 10:4-5 "(For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;).....Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;"

Eph 3:16 "That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man;"

Phil 4:13 "I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me."

1 Cor 12:8 "For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;"

Gal 1:11-12 "But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man......For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ."

Eph 1:17 "That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him:"

Rom 8:15 "For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father."

2 Tim 1:7 "For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind."

Acts 24:24-25 "And after certain days, when Felix came with his wife Drusilla, which was a Jewess, he sent for Paul, and heard him concerning the faith in Christ......And as he reasoned of righteousness, temperance, and judgment to come, Felix trembled, and answered, Go thy way for this time; when I have a convenient season, I will call for thee."

Like many other English words that have different meanings in the Greek New Testament, the book of Hebrews gives the word fear, fearful and feared seven times. It is important that we understand the meaning of these words in the Greek language since the new testament was written in Greek.

Heb 4:1 "Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it."

This word means "take anxious care."

Heb 5:7 "Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared;"

Here the word means, "fear, anxiety and dread."

Heb 10:27 "But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries."

This word means"terrible."

Heb 10:31 "It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God."

"To be afraid."

Heb 12:21 "And so terrible was the sight, that Moses said, I exceedingly fear and quake:)"

"Terrible"

Heb 12:28 "Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear:"

"Fear, anxiety and dread."

Heb 13:6 "So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me."

"Seized with alarm."

One of the last ordinances of Christ in his testament that should be carefully observed and feared is that one who is a coward to defend the gospel of Christ and is embarrassed at the name Church of Christ.

Rev 21:8 "But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death."

The word fearful here means, timid, fearful, cowardice.

Eccl 12:13 "Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man."

Incorporated into the gospel of Jesus Christ are the seven spirits of God as both are sent into the entire world to the saving and preservation of the soul. Therefore, spiritually speaking, when man preaches the gospel in its purity and simplicity, he by the spirit of fear through the gospel will convict the hearer.

Regarding the spirit of fear to man universally;

Gen 9:1-2 "And God blessed Noah and his sons, and said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth......And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth, and upon every fowl of the air, upon all that moveth upon the earth, and upon all the fishes of the sea; into your hand are they delivered."
