Do the angels of God and Satan's co-exist upon the face of the earth?
By Wendell Tenison
Before we can answer this question, we must first go back to the beginning and work our way forward until after the establishment of the church of our Lord Jesus Christ. A great many scriptures will be used and printed for the convenience of the reader. Now let us get to it. The creators of heaven and earth:
The worlds were framed by the word of God.
Heb 11:3 " Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear."
The Word (Logos/Jesus Christ) created all things and without him was not anything made that was made. God the Father created all things by Jesus Christ and by him all things consist.
John 1:1-4 "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God......The same was in the beginning with God......All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made......In him was life; and the life was the light of men."
Eph 3:9 "And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ:"
Col 1:16 -17 "For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:.....And he is before all things, and by him all things consist."
The Lord laid the foundation of the earth and the heavens are the work of his hands.
Heb 1:10 " And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands:"
God Almighty is the Father of all spirits and that includes Satan.
Heb 12:9 "Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live?"
Just by speaking the word, our Lord created the heavens.
Psa 33:6-9 "By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth......He gathereth the waters of the sea together as an heap: he layeth up the depth in storehouses......Let all the earth fear the LORD: let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him......For he spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast."
No angel exists except that he was created by our Lord.
Psa 148:1-5 "Praise ye the LORD. Praise ye the LORD from the heavens: praise him in the heights...... Praise ye him, all his angels: praise ye him, all his hosts......Praise ye him, sun and moon: praise him, all ye stars of light......Praise him, ye heavens of heavens, and ye waters that be above the heavens......Let them praise the name of the LORD: for he commanded, and they were created."
To my knowledge there is no other place in the bible where women are mentioned as having wings as a stork and performing their task.
Zec 5:9 "Then lifted I up mine eyes, and looked, and, behold, there came out two women, and the wind was in their wings; for they had wings like the wings of a stork: and they lifted up the ephah between the earth and the heaven."
The introduction of angels upon the earth:
The first angel to appear upon the earth became the father of lies and deception and all other ungodly imaginations. His favorite word is "not".
John 8:44 "Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it."
Gen 3:1-4 "Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?.....And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:.....But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die......And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:"
The serpent will crawl on his belly in the gutter and eat dirt all the days of his life. His children do the same who are with him in the gutter and they will try to bring any they can into the depths where they are.
Gen 3:14 "And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:"
The old serpent is the devil without any doubt.
Rev 12:9 "And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him."
This is the first time we read of angels being called the sons of God. Jesus Christ is the only begotten Son of God and all others including his saints are and were created.
Gen 6:1-4 "And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them,.....That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose......
And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years......
There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown."
Of course, not all of the sons of God left their habitation in heaven.
Job 38:7 " When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?"
These sons of God who left their dwelling place in heaven are now reserved under chains in darkness called Tartarus (hell KJV) awaiting the judgment. The Brown-Driver-Briggs-Gesenius, Hebrew-English Lexicon, page 43-a, states that these are the sons of God who left their habitation.
2 Pet 2:4 " For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment;"
Jude 1:6 "And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day."
Not all was well in heaven:
The popular belief is that God has never allowed evil around him. But, in heaven, God charged his angels with folly and said, the heavens were not clean.
Job 4:18 "Behold, he put no trust in his servants; and his angels he charged with folly:"
Job 15:15 "Behold, he putteth no trust in his saints; yea, the heavens are not clean in his sight."
The beginning of Satan upon the earth:
We do not know exactly why Satan was so against God in the beginning, but it might have been extreme jelousy.
Gen 3:1-4 "Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?.....And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:..... But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die......And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:"
Here we find Satan as a wondering Jew who was going up and down in the earth and he appeared with the sons of God each time they met with the Almighty. Also, he accused God of dangling the carrot so Job would be obedient. We also find in Rev.12:10, Satan accused the brethren before God day and night. When people accuse others, they are the children of the devil.
Job 1:6-7 "Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them...... And the LORD said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it."
Job 2:1-3 "Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them to present himself before the LORD......And the LORD said unto Satan, From whence comest thou? And Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it......And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? and still he holdeth fast his integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause."
It does not appear that Michael the archangel had gone to war with Satan at this point.
Jude 1:9 "Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee."
King David made a great mistake in allowing Satan to intimitdate him to number Israel. By doing so seventy thousand men lost their lives.
2 Sam 24:1 " And again the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he moved David against them to say, Go, number Israel and Judah."
The word "he" in this verse reads Satan in the NKJV.
1 Chr 21:1 "And Satan stood up against Israel, and provoked David to number Israel."
2 Sam 24:15 "So the LORD sent a pestilence upon Israel from the morning even to the time appointed: and there died of the people from Dan even to Beersheba seventy thousand men."
We have already seen how Satan tried to get God to destroy Job without cause, King David to number Israel and now he is standing on the right side of Joshua to resist him.
Zec 3:1-2 "And he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD, and Satan standing at his right hand to resist him......And the LORD said unto Satan, The LORD rebuke thee, O Satan; even the LORD that hath chosen Jerusalem rebuke thee: is not this a brand plucked out of the fire?"
The end of Satan's reign of terror in heaven has come to an end and his angels were kicked out with him.
Rev 12:7-9 "And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels,.....And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven......And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him."
Jesus said, he beheld Satan fall from heaven as lightning. No one knows when that time was.
Luke 10:18 "And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven."
There are more people upon this earth who are more fearful of the devil than they are of God. Why? Because, people are taught that God is good, but never educated that God means business when it comes to keeping his commandments. Besides, the popular belief is that everyone is going to heaven anyway regardless of what God has to say about the judgment of the unrighteous. Who has the power, God's saints or the devil? Let the bible answer.
James 4:7 "Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you."
Epithet of the king of Babylon:
The king of Babylon is the subject here and not Lucifer. However, God compares the king to Lucifer as the man who made the earth to tremble and did shake kingdoms.
Isa 14:12-16 " How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!.....For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:.....I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High......Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit......They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider thee, saying, Is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms;"
New Brown-Driver-Briggs-Gesenius Hebrew- English Lexicon, page 237; "Shining one, epithet of the king of Babylon, Isa.14:12, how art thou fallen, shining one, son of dawn! i.e. star of the morning, epithet of (Venus as), morning star"
God sent his angels to take out his revenge on the wicked:
When the bible says, God sent an evil angel or spirit, they were not Satan's angels, but his, sending them where he pleased.
Judg 9:23 "Then God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the men of Shechem; and the men of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech:"
King Saul was God's chosen to be the first king of Israel, but Saul disobeyed and he paid the price.
1 Sam 16:14-16 "But the spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD troubled him...... And Saul's servants said unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubleth thee......Let our lord now command thy servants, which are before thee, to seek out a man, who is a cunning player on an harp: and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well."
God asked his host the question as how to get King Ahab to go up and fight the Syrians that he might be killed. God was ready for this wicked king of Israel to meet his maker by sending a lying spirit into the mouth of all of Ahab's four hundred false prophets.
1 Ki 22:19-23 "And he said, Hear thou therefore the word of the LORD: I saw the LORD sitting on his throne, and all the host of heaven standing by him on his right hand and on his left...... And the LORD said, Who shall persuade Ahab, that he may go up and fall at Ramothgilead? And one said on this manner, and another said on that manner......And there came forth a spirit, and stood before the LORD, and said, I will persuade him...... And the LORD said unto him, Wherewith? And he said, I will go forth, and I will be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets. And he said, Thou shalt persuade him, and prevail also: go forth, and do so......Now therefore, behold, the LORD hath put a lying spirit in the mouth of all these thy prophets, and the LORD hath spoken evil concerning thee."
Before God delivered his children out of Egypt, he sent many plagues among them even the death angel to destroy all their firstborn.
Psa 78:49 "He cast upon them the fierceness of his anger, wrath, and indignation, and trouble, by sending evil angels among them."
While King Herod was giving his oration, the people said, it was the voice of a god and not of a man. Therefore, the angel of the Lord smote him with worms and he gave up the ghost.
Acts 12:23 "And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost."
There are a lot of people who will be very disappointed when they read this verse.
Isa 45:7 "I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things".
Jesus and his disciples casting out evil spirits:
We do not know how many unclean spirits Jesus cast out, but there were a great many.
Luke 8:30 "And Jesus asked him, saying, What is thy name? And he said, Legion: because many devils were entered into him."
Too our surprise, there are deaf and dumb spirits, but Jesus had the power to make him understand and obey him.
Mark 9:25-29 " When Jesus saw that the people came running together, he rebuked the foul spirit, saying unto him, Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I charge thee, come out of him, and enter no more into him......And the spirit cried, and rent him sore, and came out of him: and he was as one dead; insomuch that many said, He is dead...... But Jesus took him by the hand, and lifted him up; and he arose......And when he was come into the house, his disciples asked him privately, Why could not we cast him out?..... And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting."
Many of my brethren will be very disturbed by this passage, because they believe only the apostles had the power to perform miracles. Here is one whom they did not know and was not one of them.
Luke 9:49-50 "And John answered and said, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name; and we forbad him, because he followeth not with us......And Jesus said unto him, Forbid him not: for he that is not against us is for us."
The prince of this world (the devil) has had his fun during the ministry of Christ, but now it is coming to a close.
John 12:31 "Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out"
The doctrines of devils:
Satan himself is a false minister in sheep's clothing deceiving the masses. Also, he has multitudes of ministers who are doing the same thing. How does Satan do this? By perverting the word of God to sooth the hearers of what they want to hear.
2 Cor 11:14-15 "And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light......Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works."
We wonder why so many people cannot understand the simple word of God. The answer is that their eyes, ears and hearts have been blined by the god of this world.
2 Cor 4:4 "In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them."
Satan's kingdom is of this world and he sits above the earth in the air on his throne controlling his subjects.
Eph 2:2 "Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:"
The new testament never speaks of the doctrine of Christ in the plural. He has only one doctrine, but the devil has many in order to appease those who want to have their ears tickled.
1 Tim 4:1 "Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;"
The angels of God tell on us:
Who told the Lord about Sodom and Gomorrah as to how wicked they were? It was an angel or angels.
Gen 18:20-21 "And the LORD said, Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous;.....I will go down now, and see whether they have done altogether according to the cry of it, which is come unto me; and if not, I will know."
When a Jew under the law of Moses made a vow to pay, they had better and not let the angel of the Lord hear them say, it was a mistake that they made it.
Eccl 5:4-6 "When thou vowest a vow unto God, defer not to pay it; for he hath no pleasure in fools: pay that which thou hast vowed......Better is it that thou shouldest not vow, than that thou shouldest vow and not pay...... Suffer not thy mouth to cause thy flesh to sin; neither say thou before the angel, that it was an error: wherefore should God be angry at thy voice, and destroy the work of thine hands?"
Children have always been abused in one way or another, but little do those who do these things know that the Lord always knows what they are doing.
Mat 18:10 "Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven."
Why because of the angels? Because, they see everything that we do and report to God.
1 Cor 11:10 "For this cause ought the woman to have power on her head because of the angels."
Angels of God minister to the saints:
The angels of God minister unto us in ways that we know nothing about.
Heb 1:13-14 "But to which of the angels said he at any time, Sit on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool?..... Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?"
In regards to God helping and protecting his saints, the following are my favorite verses, because there are more of us than them.
2 Ki 6:16 -17 "And he answered, Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them......And Elisha prayed, and said, LORD, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the LORD opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha."
Hell (Gehenna) is prepared for the devil and his angels and the wicked in his kingdom:
Mat 13:40-42 "As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world......The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity;..... And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth."
Mat 25:41 "Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:"
The final end of Satan has come.
Rev 20:10 "And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever."
Angels of God in the resurrection:
Our Lord will not set his foot on this earth when he returns, but will appear in the clouds to receive his own with the shout of the archangel.
1 Th 4:16-17 "For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:.....Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord."
Enoch the seventh from Adam, prophesied millenniums ago that the Lord would come with ten thousands of his saints to execute judgment upon the ungodly.
Jude 1:14-15 "And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints,.....To execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him."
Now we come to answer the question, "Do the angels of God co-exist with Satan's upon the face of the earth?"
The respect that evil spirits had for Jesus and his disciples:
In the very beginning of Jesus' ministry, the devils through the name of the Lord were subject unto his seventy disciples he sent on what we call the limited commission.
Luke 10:17 "And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name."
The unclean spirits fell down before him and declared that he was the Son of God. He also charged them not to make him known, because the time was not right .
Mark 3:10-12 "For he had healed many; insomuch that they pressed upon him for to touch him, as many as had plagues...... And unclean spirits, when they saw him, fell down before him, and cried, saying, Thou art the Son of God......And he straitly charged them that they should not make him known."
The man who had many devils for a long time who lived among the tombs, fell down at the feet of Jesus and acknowledged that he was the Son of God most high. He also asked Jesus not to torment him
Luke 8:26-29 "And they arrived at the country of the Gadarenes, which is over against Galilee......And when he went forth to land, there met him out of the city a certain man, which had devils long time, and ware no clothes, neither abode in any house, but in the tombs......When he saw Jesus, he cried out, and fell down before him, and with a loud voice said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God most high? I beseech thee, torment me not......For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For oftentimes it had caught him: and he was kept bound with chains and in fetters; and he brake the bands, and was driven of the devil into the wilderness.)"
This unclean spirit did not walk, but he ran and worshipped the Lord. He also was fearful of Jesus and wanted nothing to do with him, openly declaring that he was the Son of the most high God and adjured him by God himself that he torment him not.
Mark 5:6-8 "But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshipped him,.....And cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the most high God? I adjure thee by God, that thou torment me not...... For he said unto him, Come out of the man, thou unclean spirit."
This unclean spirit asked Jesus not to send them into the deep. The Greek New Testament uses the word abyss instead of deep. This place is Tartarus where God has reserved those sons of God who left their estate in the beginning.
Luke 8:31 "And they besought him that he would not command them to go out into the deep."
Jesus would not let the devils speak, because they knew who he was.
Mark 1:34 "And he healed many that were sick of divers diseases, and cast out many devils; and suffered not the devils to speak, because they knew him."
Here again, Jesus would not let them speak, because they said, thou art Christ the Son of God.
Luke 4:41"And devils also came out of many, crying out, and saying, Thou art Christ the Son of God. And he rebuking them suffered them not to speak: for they knew that he was Christ."
After Paul had healed the sick and cast out unclean spirits, there were seven men who were the sons of the high priest, Sceva, who were wondering Jews and exorsists, who would try to deceive the people by casting out the same evil spirits. When they commanded the evil spirit to come out, the man in whom the spirit was whipped all seven and sent them out naked and wounded.
There is no question about it, this evil spirit was on the side of Jesus and Paul.
Acts 19:10-17 "And this continued by the space of two years; so that all they which dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks...... And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul:.....So that from his body were brought unto the sick handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out of them......Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth......And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, and chief of the priests, which did so......And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye?.....And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded...... And this was known to all the Jews and Greeks also dwelling at Ephesus; and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified."
Last of all, but not least, the devils believe and tremble and fear God more than the greater part of the worlds population.
James 2:19 "Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble."
It becomes very clear in the closing scriptures of this work that Satan's angels do not give the angels of God any problem on the face of the earth.
I will close with this parting note and let the bible do the explaining.
Psa 36:1 "To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David the servant of the LORD. The transgression of the wicked saith within my heart, that there is no fear of God before his eyes."
Rom 3:18 "There is no fear of God before their eyes."
