Made in the Image and Likeness of the Godhead

By Wendell Tenison

Beginning with Gen.1:1 thru Gen.2:3, the word God in the Hebrew language is Eloheem. Eloheem is plural, meaning, it includes God Almighty the Father, God the Son the Lord Jesus Christ and God the Holy Spirit. The word Godhead is found three times in the new testament and are as follows:

Acts 17:29 "Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device."

Rom 1:20 "For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:"

Col 2:9 "For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily."

Among other passages that describe the Son of God as God, this one is by far the best.

Heb 1:8 "But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom."

Also, the Son of God is often called Lord in most of the Hebrew writings and the new testament. He can be compared to a piece of cotton candy taken from the whole and the only difference is that it is smaller being the Son of the Father.

Eph 4:4 -6 "There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling;.....One Lord, one faith, one baptism,.....One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all."

Completing the triune is the Holy Spirit who also is God as the apostle Peter points out to Ananias.

Acts 5:3-5 "But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land?.....Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God......And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and gave up the ghost: and great fear came on all them that heard these things."

To further reinforce the plurality of the Godhead, God gave us an undeniable truth in stating the word, " us" for the Godhead.

Gen 1:26-27 "And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth......So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them."

Gen 3:22 "And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:"

Gen 11:7 "Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech."

Isa 6:8 "Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me."

John 17:20 -21 "Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;.....That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me."

Without any controversy, we are made in the image and likeness of the Godhead.

Gen 5:1 "This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, in the likeness of God made he him;"

Gen 9:6 "Whoso sheddeth man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man."

1 Cor 11:7 "For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man."

Made in the likeness of the attributes of the Godhead:

  • The Lord God has a soul.

Lev 26:11 "And I will set my tabernacle among you: and my soul shall not abhor you."

Judg 10:16 "And they put away the strange gods from among them, and served the LORD: and his soul was grieved for the misery of Israel."

Isa 1:14 "Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hateth: they are a trouble unto me; I am weary to bear them."

So does man have a soul.

Gen 2:7 "And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul."

  • It repented the Lord that he had made man and it grieved him at his heart.

Gen 6:6 "And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart."

The Lord commands that man repent.

Luke 13:3 "I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish."

  • The Lord God has a heart.

Ezek 28:2 "Son of man, say unto the prince of Tyrus, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Because thine heart is lifted up, and thou hast said, I am a God, I sit in the seat of God, in the midst of the seas; yet thou art a man, and not God, though thou set thine heart as the heart of God:"

The Lord God has created a heart within man in addition to the fleshly blood pump. Even though it cannot be seen with the eye, it will live forever in eternity, Ps.22:26.

Prov 4:23 "Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life."

  • The Lord has a mind.

Lev 24:12 "And they put him in ward, that the mind of the LORD might be showed them."

Rom 11:34 "For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor?"

The Lord has given man a mind for his learning.

Mat 22:37 "Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind."

  • The mind of the Holy Spirit.

Rom 8:26-27 "Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered......And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God."

The mind of man has a spirit.

Eph 4:23 "And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;"

  • The Lord has a spirit.

Gen 6:3 "And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years."

The Lord formed the spirit of man within him.

Zec 12:1 "The burden of the word of the LORD for Israel, saith the LORD, which stretcheth forth the heavens, and layeth the foundation of the earth, and formeth the spirit of man within him."

  • The Lord is eternal on his throne in the heavens.

Psa 103:19 "The LORD hath prepared his throne in the heavens; and his kingdom ruleth over all."

God has placed eternity within man's heart and he cannot get rid of it.

NKJV Eccl.3:11 "He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also He has put eternity in their hearts, except that no one can find out the work that God does from beginning to end."

  • Of the various names of the Lord God, one is never mentioned by man.

Exo 34:14 "For thou shalt worship no other god: for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God:"

Josh 24:19 "And Joshua said unto the people, Ye cannot serve the LORD: for he is an holy God; he is a jealous God; he will not forgive your transgressions nor your sins."

Made in the likeness of God, man sometimes has a jealous streak.

Prov 6:34 "For jealousy is the rage of a man: therefore he will not spare in the day of vengeance."

  • Moses asked God by whose name he should tell the people who sent him to them.

Exo 3:13-14 "And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them?.....And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you."

John 8:58 "Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am."

John 11:25 "Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:"

It is no wonder that we use the phrase "I am so and so", being made in the image of God.

Gen 22:1 "And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am."

  • The Lord is good and upright.

Psa 25:8 "Good and upright is the LORD: therefore will he teach sinners in the way."

God made man upright, but his creation are masters at changing his blueprint.

Eccl 7:29 "Lo, this only have I found, that God hath made man upright; but they have sought out many inventions."

  • Jesus Christ the Son of God is the Prince of Peace.

Isa 9:6 "For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace."

If there were no peacemakers in the world it would be in shambles.

Mat 5:9 "Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God."

  • If not for the patience of God, he might have destroyed the works of his hands, that is, the evil works of men along with the earth he was taken from.

Psa 8:4 "What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?"

Rom 15:5 "Now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be likeminded one toward another according to Christ Jesus:"

Rev 1:9 "I John, who also am your brother, and companion in tribulation, and in the kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was in the isle that is called Patmos, for the word of God, and for the testimony of Jesus Christ."

The old proverb is true, haste makes waste.

Eccl 7:8 "Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof: and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit."

Made with the emotions of the Godhead:

  • Our Saviour and Lord Jesus Christ was the Son of God while upon the earth, but more importantly his Son before the foundation of the world. Jesus showed great emotion for the loss of Lazarus.

John 17:5 "And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was."

    John 11:35 "Jesus wept."

Women tend to show this emotion more than men. The apostle Paul told the Romans to weep with them that weep.

Rom 12:15 "Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep."

  • Most religious leaders tend to show only the love side of the Lord, but he also became angry.

Mark 3:5 "And when he had looked round about on them with anger, being grieved for the hardness of their hearts, he saith unto the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it out: and his hand was restored whole as the other."

Too many times man lets this emotion get out of control.

Eph 4:26 "Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath:"

  • This emotion of groaning indicates a deep sorrow of the soul of which both the Lord and the Holy Spirit experienced.

John 11:33 "When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled,"

Rom 8:26 "Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered."

John 11:38 "Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it."

The Lord heard the groaning of his people in Egypt.

Acts 7:34 "I have seen, I have seen the affliction of my people which is in Egypt, and I have heard their groaning, and am come down to deliver them. And now come, I will send thee into Egypt."

  • Love is the greatest of all emotions that all seek of others, but too many fall short to obtain.

1 John 3:16 -17 "Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren......But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?"

John 15:13 "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends."

The opposite of love is hate and those possessing the latter will fall into the condemnation of God.

1 John 3:14-15 "We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death......Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him."

  • We reflect the image of our maker when we are grieved as he was for the fall of mankind into the gutter.

Gen 6:6 "And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart."

  • The Lord hates as well as love, especially divorce.

Prov 6:16-19 "These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him:.....A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,.....An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief,.....A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren."

Mal 2:16 "For the LORD, the God of Israel, saith that he hateth putting away: for one covereth violence with his garment, saith the LORD of hosts: therefore take heed to your spirit, that ye deal not treacherously."

Men are hated for doing the right things.

1 John 3:13 "Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you."

  • The Lord our God has displayed his wrath upon many in the generations before us, but has it ceased?

Hosea 13:11 "I gave thee a king in mine anger, and took him away in my wrath."

Rom 1:18 "For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;"

Eph 5:6 "Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience."

Very often men get caught up in the emotions of the game and better judgment goes out the window.

Prov 14:29 "He that is slow to wrath is of great understanding: but he that is hasty of spirit exalteth folly."

  • Does the Lord ever laugh? He always has the last laugh.

Psa 2:4 "He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision."

Psa 37:13 "The Lord shall laugh at him: for he seeth that his day is coming."

Psa 59:8 "But thou, O LORD, shalt laugh at them; thou shalt have all the heathen in derision."

Laughter will heal many of the soul's sorrows.

Eccl 3:4 "A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;"

  • One of the most outstanding traits of the Lord is mercy.

Heb 8:12 "For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more."

As God is merciful so must we be likewise.

Luke 6:36 "Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful."

  • Without the pity of the Lord, man would be in a terrible condition.

Ezek 36:21 "But I had pity for mine holy name, which the house of Israel had profaned among the heathen, whither they went."

Pity is one of the things that Peter encouraged the brethren to have.

1 Pet 3:8 "Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous:"

  • Does our Lord sing, if so does he among the brethren?

Zep 3:17 "The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing."

Heb 2:12 "Saying, I will declare thy name unto my brethren, in the midst of the church will I sing praise unto thee."

Man has very beautiful voices to sing with, but the Lord God gave us such a wonderful instrument to sing praises to him.

Eph 5:19 "Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;"

Col 3:16 "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord."

  • While his servant Stephen was being stoned to death, Jesus was standing on the right hand of God in heaven.

Acts 7:55 -56 "But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God,..... And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God."

In the case of a tragic event, men will rise from their feet to see what has happened. Did our Lord borrow this from man or did we inherit it from the Lord?

  • The joy of the Lord and the Holy Spirit.

Neh 8:10 "Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our Lord: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the LORD is your strength."

1 Th 1:6 "And ye became followers of us, and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Ghost:"

Man is filled with joy in many ways, but joy in the Lord is the greatest.

Gal 5:22 "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,"

  • Jesus made light of Herod calling him a fox.

Luke 13:31-32 "The same day there came certain of the Pharisees, saying unto him, Get thee out, and depart hence: for Herod will kill thee......And he said unto them, Go ye, and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out devils, and I do cures to day and to morrow, and the third day I shall be perfected."

Man makes light and jokes about others all the time.

Endowed with the five senses of the Godhead:

  • Hearing of the Lord

Isa 37:17 "Incline thine ear, O LORD, and hear; open thine eyes, O LORD, and see: and hear all the words of Sennacherib, which hath sent to reproach the living God."

  • Sight of the Lord

Psa 33:18 "Behold, the eye of the LORD is upon them that fear him, upon them that hope in his mercy;"

  • Smelling of the Lord

Gen 8:21 "And the LORD smelled a sweet savour; and the LORD said in his heart, I will not again curse the ground any more for man's sake; for the imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth; neither will I again smite any more every thing living, as I have done."

  • Taste of the Lord

Psa 119:103 "How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth!"

  • The touch of the Lord

Job 1:11 "But put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face."

Job 2:5 "But put forth thine hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curse thee to thy face."

Five divisions of the Godhead mind:

  • The intellect of the mind is the learning center of man.

Lev 24:12 "And they put him in ward, that the mind of the LORD might be showed them."

Deu 4:35 -36 "Unto thee it was showed, that thou mightest know that the LORD he is God; there is none else beside him......Out of heaven he made thee to hear his voice, that he might instruct thee: and upon earth he showed thee his great fire; and thou heardest his words out of the midst of the fire."

Psa 25:4 -5 "Show me thy ways, O LORD; teach me thy paths......Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the God of my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day."

Psa 32:8 "I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye."

  • The emotions of the mind are the stovepipe for man.

Gen 6:6 "And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart."

Psa 95:10 "Forty years long was I grieved with this generation, and said, It is a people that do err in their heart, and they have not known my ways:"

  • The conscience of the mind is the courtroom of man.

Exo 12:12 "For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night, and will smite all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the LORD."

John 8:9 "And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst."

1 Tim 4:2 "Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;"

Titus 1:15 "Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled."

  • The will of the mind is the stop and go.

Gen 22:17 "That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies;"

Gal 1:4 "Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father:"

1 John 2:17 "And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever."

Perhaps there are many other ways that will come to the mind of the reader not found in this article as to how we are made in the image and likeness of the Godhead.
