The Word Of God

By Wendell Tenison

A study of the word of God is the most thought provoking and intense one will ever undertake. God's word in the new testament is synonymous with the gospel, the truth and for certain the breath of spiritual life. According to the apostle Paul, there is no other gospel other than what was delivered from the Lord and woe to him who claims to have received another, Gal.1:6-9. In fact, Paul said, let him be accursed.

Mat 4:4 "But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God."

The belief of some is that man is an island to himself. The heavens, earth and all living things are upheld by the word of his power. By and large, this generation has tuned out his word and is far removed from any instructions of God, but the apostle Paul said, in him we live, move and have our being, Acts 17:28.

Mat 13:19 "When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side."

Whe word of God is his voice through Christ to the kingdom of his dear Son. This parable of the sower accurately describes the great majority who willingly refuse to understand the word and then Satan the great thief, steals it away.

Mark 7:13 "Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye."

Little has changed from the days of the Scribes and Pharisees to this present time of many making the word of God of none effect by their custom and tradition.

Luke 1:2 "Even as they delivered them unto us, which from the beginning were eyewitnesses, and ministers of the word;"

According to the apostle Paul, every man in the church of our dear Lord is a minister of the word, 1Cor.3:5.

Luke 8:11 "Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God."

The word of God the seed, is the sperm of life if it becomes fertile in the heart and will produce Christians.

Luke 8:21 "And he answered and said unto them, My mother and my brethren are these which hear the word of God, and do it."

Jesus did not consider his immediate family above anyone else. The condition is only if they hear and do the word. Otherwise, they are none of his.

Luke 11:28 "But he said,Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it."

The blessings of God are essential upon every one of us to survive. He sends his rain upon the just and the unjust, Matt.5:45. The greatest blessings he bestows are upon those who hear and keep his word. Many are willing to hear the word, but refuse to keep it.

John 1:1 "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."

The Greek word here for the Word is Logos. Meaning, the Logos, Christ is the word of life and can and does transfuse this life into those of his. The Logos has to do with thought and the mind whereby, he simply by taking thought can accomplish in an instant anything he so pleases, Matt.6:27. Jesus Christ, the Logos, is the mighty God and everlasting Father, Heb.1:8; Isa.9:6.

John 1:14 "And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth."

The Word, the Logos, the Christ, was God manifested in the flesh, 1Tim.3:16.

John 6:63 "It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life."

It is our spirit that quickens or animates us and then as a flower springing forth we wither away. The words of Jesus will never vanish, but are eternal. We cannot comprehend how his word is animated by his Spirit and thus it is alive. Man tends to think the word of God is pen and ink as was Moses law. Believe it or not, the words of Christ are alive and present throughout the entire world, even greater than the angels.

John 12:48 "He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day."

Again we see the word of Jesus as the living judge. Those who say we are legalist, that is abiding by the law of Christ in a strict sense, will face the legal living judge, the word of Jesus on the day of judgment.

John 15:3 "Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you."

God Almighty said in the very beginning that life is in the blood, Gen.9:4. Our Lord said, the cup that he drank after the supper of the passover was put aside is the new testament in his blood, Luke 22:20. As quoted earlier, Jesus said his words are "spirit" and "life." The spiritual life, his words are in his blood and it and only it can take away the sin from those in his body. Now we understand how his disciples were made clean by the word he had spoken unto them. In fact, this removal of sin occurs on a daily basis, because those in his body are renewed by his blood. Not only does his blood remove the sin and corruption from his body, the church, it also provides food, water and breath to the saints.

John 17:6 "I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word."

Why were those out of the world given to Jesus from his Father? Because they had kept the word of God.

John 17:17 "Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth."

Let God be true and every man a liar, Rom.3:4. The religious world is notorious for preaching only half truths. Satan's favorite word is "not." You do "not" have to obey God in many of his commandments. The Serpent said to Eve, you will "not" surley die in the day you eat of the fruit.

Acts 4:4 "Howbeit many of them which heard the word believed; and the number of the men was about five thousand."

Denominational preachers will tell you all that is required is belief. Jesus said, if you love me, keep my commandments, John 14:15. Jesus also said, that he had finished the work his Father gave him to do, John 17:4. It is reasonable to say that denominational preachers are saying, they are better than the Lord, because Jesus obeyed his Father and they do not have to obey and keep the commandments of Jesus, Heb.5:8.

Acts 6:7 "And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith."

An increase in the word is consistent with the increase of disciples. A watered down gospel will cause those in the pews to sleep and the rest with their eyes on their watches. It is said of some preachers, what does it mean when the preacher looks at the clock? The answer is nothing.

Acts 8:4 "Therefore they that were scattered abroad went every where preaching the word."

If you want a covey of quails to multiply, shoot into them and they will scatter and increase. The same was true with the word of God. When the saints were persecuted they scattered like quails and multiplied, Acts 8:4.

Acts 8:14 "Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John:"

The apostle Paul said, to the Jew first and also to the Greek, Rom.1:16. The Samaritans were half Jew and they received the word being between the Jew and Gentile.

Acts 15:7 "And when there had been much disputing, Peter rose up, and said unto them, Men and brethren, ye know how that a good while ago God made choice among us, that the Gentiles by my mouth should hear the word of the gospel, and believe."

The word and the gospel are the same thing.

Acts 20:32 "And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified."

The word of his grace and power prepares us for eternal life.

Rom 9:9 "For this is the word of promise, At this time will I come, and Sarah shall have a son."

When God makes a promise he keeps it.

Rom 10:8 "But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach;"

The apostle Paul said, the gospel was preached to the Jews before them as well as unto themselves, but the word did not profit the former, because it was not mixed with faith in those who heard it, Heb.4:2.

Rom 10:17 "So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God."

Hearing the word of God goes far beyond simply hearing one or two verses. Those who refuse to hear the word of God are weak, sickly and ready to die. The only way to increase our faith is to read and understand the word of God.

2 Cor 2:17 "For we are not as many, which corrupt the word of God: but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God speak we in Christ."

Satan was the first to corrupt the word of God. God said to Eve, in the day you eat of the fruit you will surley die. Satan said, you will not surley die. Satan is the father of the lie, John 8:44, and many preachers are his bastard children in that they also corrupt the word of God, 2Cor.11:4-15.

2 Cor 4:2 "But have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man's conscience in the sight of God."

Truth and deceit are total enemies to each other and Paul was saying, there were those who handled the word of God deceitfully. Preachers today are telling folks if they will only accept Christ as their Savior, they will become rich in this worlds goods. Tell that now to the millions who believed them who have fallen on hard times in this state of depression.

2 Cor 5:19 "To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation."

As stated before, the word of God is the only thing that can save, thereby, making it the word of reconciliation.

Eph 5:26 "That he might sanctify and cleanse "it" with the washing of water by the word,"

Here again, we see the cleansing of the word, but in combination with water. There are many who hate this verse, because they say, water is not necessary for salvation. The "it" is the church of our dear Lord.

Eph 6:17 "And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:"

There are those preachers who say, the word of God is the Spirit of God. I know whereof I speak, because I have read what they say. Any fourth grader can understand that the sword of the Spirit is not the same thing as the Spirit, but something belonging to the Spirit. The word of God is the sword or weapon of the Spirit.

Phil 2:16 "Holding forth the word of life; that I may rejoice in the day of Christ, that I have not run in vain, neither laboured in vain."

Remember, Jesus is the Word, the word of life. As stated before, this life is in his blood.

Col 3:16 "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord."

Wisdom of the word of God richly dwelling within will teach and produce singing with grace in our hearts to the Lord. This is only one kind of spiritual worship the word produces that comes from the heart and not from any man made instrument. But, what about the use of instruments in heaven? Why can we not have them here on earth in our worship? My answer to that is why can we not marry in heaven, we marry upon the earth? Our Lord said, there is no marriage in heaven, Matt.22:30. Marriage is not authorized in heaven and neither is the use of mechanical intruments authorized on earth in our worship. I will pay a great sum of money for anyone who can find it in the law of Christ.

1 Tim 4:5 "For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer."

This had reference to eating meats that were forbidden by some. The word of God and prayer work together to sanctify and cleanse anything we eat.

1 Tim 5:17 "Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine."

Elders are to be paid if this is their desire. Their work is as necessary as those who preach for a living. This is double honor if they also preach the word. Many churches balk at paying their leadership.

2 Tim 2:9 "Wherein I suffer trouble, as an evil doer, even unto bonds; but the word of God is not bound."

The word of God is written within our hearts and minds and no chain can bind it, Heb.10:16. Some of Paul's greatest work was done while he was chained in prison, but the word of God is not bound, 2Tim.2:9.

2 Tim 2:15 "Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth."

It is impossible for those newly come to the faith to rightly divide the word of truth. Satan's false doctrine that everyone can have his own interpretation is a promise that hell is awaiting them. The apostle Peter said, no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation, 2Pet.1:20. By everyone having his own interpretation leads to division and strife of which our Lord condemns. Study is work and work is a dirty word within the denominations.

2 Tim 4:2 "Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine."

Paul is saying, preach the word when they like it and when they don't like it.

Titus 1:9 "Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers."

The faithful word becomes sound doctrine. Why? To put to silence the ingnorance of foolish men.

Titus 2:5 "To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed."

The word of God can be blasphemed by those who see Christians not living in accordance to the commands of Christ. In other words, they might say, if this is what Christian living is all about, we are not interested, seeing hypocrisy among the saints.

Heb 1:3 "Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;"

As stated before, the heavens, earth and all living things are upheld by the word of his power. Who can ascend into the heavens or descend into the deep (abyss - Greek), but Jesus Christ, Rom.10:6-7?"

Heb 4:12 "For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart."

First, the word of God is living or quick as already mentioned.

Heb 4:12 "For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart."

Second, the word of God is powerful. Who can resist it?

Heb 4:12 "For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart."

Third, the word of God is sharper than any two edged sword. It cuts on the forward swing as well as the backward. It does not miss. Without a doubt, using the word of God unskilfully will cut you deep even to the destruction of the soul.

Heb 4:12 "For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart."

Fourth, it can and has divided soul from spirit and that means death, Josh.8:25-27; 1Kings 16:11-12; 1Kings 22:37-38.

Heb 4:12 "For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart."

Fifth, the word is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Speaking of Joseph who was sold and then in prison, the word of the Lord tried him, Ps.105:17-21. Remember what our Lord said, the word that he had spoken will judge the man in the last day who rejected it, John12:48.

Heb 5:13 "For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe."

Babes in Christ have need of milk and not strong meat. The meat of the word belongs to those who are full of age.

Heb 6:5 "And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come,"

The apostle Paul is warning those among other things who had tasted the good word of God and the powers of the world to come that is, the angels, Heb.2:5, if they should fall away there is no renewal of repentance.

Heb 11:3 "Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear."

The worlds were made by God speaking and it was done. Not only did God make the worlds by his word, but the heavens and all the hosts of them by the breath of his mouth, Ps.33:6.

James 1:18 "Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures."

Remember the words of Jesus how the good seed is the word of God. We were conceived by the good seed and brought forth to bear fruit. The apostle Peter will bring to more light on this subject.

James 1:21 "Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls."

The word of God is stamped within our hearts and minds and is also able to save us in the last day, Heb.8:13.

James 1:22 "But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves."

Our Lord said, those people of his day gave only lip service to God, Matt.15:8. Deception is one of Satan's masterful tools he uses on the masses to deceive themselves. Be not deveived, God is not mocked, whatsoever a man sows that shall he also reap, Gal.6:7.

1 Pet 1:23 "Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever."

The incorruptible seed is the word of God. However, there is a corruptible seed of which the apostle Paul said, was the perverted gospel of Christ, Gal.1:7. Jesus said, except a man be born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God, John 3:5. No spiritual birth can exist unless there is a seed and that seed being the good word of God. The combination is seed, water and the Spirit of God. Paul said, we are all baptized (born) by one Spirit into one body or one church, 1Cor.12:13. Under Moses' law, all one had to do to become a citizen of the Jewish nation was to be born into it by natural birth. Under the law of Christ, his invitation is to the entire world, meaning, there is no longer a single nation to be favored. Now the requirement is to be born spiritually and that is by the spiritual birth baptism.

1 Pet 1:25 "But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you."

Jesus said, heaven and earth will pass away, but my words shall not pass away, Luke 21:33. An everlasting gospel is preached by an everlasting word.

1 Pet 2:2 "As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:"

Spiritual babes are much like fleshly new borns in that it takes milk to grow. Unless the spiritual babe grows continually, he will become a spiritual dwarf.

1 Pet 3:1 "Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives;"

The apostle Peter does not mince any words when he told the Christian wife not to try and covert her unbelieving husband with the word of God. Why? Because he is her head and he most likely would resent her as having this power over him. Her chaste manner of life before him is the best means of winning him to Christ.

2 Pet 3:5 "For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water:"

The word "standing" in the KJV is actually "subsisting" in the Greek Text. It was only by the word of God that the earth could withstand the undue pressure of the overflowing water. Otherwise, it would have crumbled.

2 Pet 3:7 "But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men."

There are those in the denominations who will come to your door and try and put the fear of God within you by saying, the earth is going to be destroyed by nuclear explosions. The heavens and the earth are reserved by the same word of God unto fire in the day of judgment. Who do I believe, God or these false prophets? You figure it out.

1 John 1:1 "That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life;"

There is life within life in the Word or Logos and he is within himself. The great mystery of godliness is that God was manifested in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world and received up into glory, 1Tim.3:16. Jesus the Christ dwells in the light that no man can approach, 1Tim.6:16. Since light energizes life, the Word or the Logos is the source of all life period.

1 John 5:7 "For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one."

There are those who deny the Triunity in heaven, but they come short of understanding the likeness of the Trinity in the creation. A study of the Trinity in the creation will reveal that God made man in his likeness and the latter takes on the attributes of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. This study is not for babes in Christ, the gainsayers, nor the illiterate of God's word who are ever learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth, 2Tim.3:7.

Rev 3:10 "Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth."

One of the attributes of God within man is patience.

Rev 6:9 "And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held:"

There are many in this world who hate the word of God. Therefore, a great many have been slain for the word of God. In his defense, Stephen said to those who stoned him to death, which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted and have slain those who have shown before of the coming of the Just One, Acts 7:52?

Rev 19:11 "And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war......His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself......And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.....And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean......And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God......And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS."

God Almighty has highly exalted the Christ and given him a name above every name, Phil.2:9. He is called Faithful and True, King Of Kings, And Lord Of Lords and I believe his name above every name is The Word of God. In years gone by the denominational preachers in reference to the Lord's church have said, there is nothing in a name. When they meet their Lord in the judgment, I dare them to tell him there in nothing in a name. At the name of Jesus every knee will bow, of things in heaven, things in the earth and things under the earth, Phil.2:10.

Rev 20:4 "And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years."

Here again, souls were beheaded for the witness of Jesus and the Word of God.

Jer 23:29 "Is not my word like as a fire? saith the LORD; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces?"

Jesus Christ the Word is the chief corner stone in the temple of God and whomsoever will fall upon this stone will be broken, but on whom this stone shall fall, he shall be ground to powder, Matt.21:44.

Psa 119:11 "Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee."

Believe it or not, hiding the word of God in your heart is a promise that you will not sin against God.

Psa 119:42 "So shall I have wherewith to answer him that reproacheth me: for I trust in thy word."

O ye of little faith. Where is your trust in the word of God?

Psa 119:50 "This is my comfort in my affliction: for thy word hath quickened me."

As Jesus said, the words that I speak are spirit and life. Therefore, his words do quicken us.

Psa 119:89 "LAMED. For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven."

Men have always tried to change and pervert the word of God, but it is settled in heaven forever and they cannot touch it.

Psa 119:105 "NUN. Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path."

This is the sum of man not living by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. Those who say they do not believe in God are ignorant of the fact that they live, move and have their being by the word of God, Acts 17:28.
